Canix continues to innovate and improve the way cannabis businesses manage their operations with the introduction of the new Retail ID feature. This release offers a streamlined way to generate METRC Product Labels directly within the Canix Label Maker, making it easier than ever to stay compliant while labeling products for retail sale. Here's a detailed look at how it works and what you need to know.

What is a Retail ID?

A Retail ID is a unique identifier, commonly associated with the METRC Product Label, used to track cannabis products in compliance with regulatory requirements. It contains a QR code that retailers and customers can scan to verify the product’s details and `origin, ensuring transparency and traceability.

With Canix’s latest update, you can now generate these retail IDs as part of your label design process. This feature integrates seamlessly with your packaging workflow, adding the ability to quickly create labels with both a QR code and a unique URL behind it for each product package.

How It Works: Generating Retail IDs with Canix

  1. Label Maker IntegrationIn the Canix Label Maker, you’ll notice two new fields related to retail ID generation:
    • METRC Product Label: This controls the QR code for retail IDs.
    • METRC Product Label URL: This field displays the unique URL behind the QR code, which is optional.
Once these fields are added to your label design, you're ready to start generating retail IDs. You can choose to include just the QR code or both the QR code and URL, depending on your needs.
  1. Download LabelsWhen you're ready to download your labels, Canix provides an easy-to-use modal where you can specify how many METRC Product Labels you want to generate for each package. This includes pre-filling the values based on the package type (e.g., count-based products, each with a unique retail ID).
  1. Validation & RestrictionsThere are a couple of restrictions to keep in mind when generating retail IDs:
    • Test Status Requirement: Retail IDs can only be generated for packages that have passed the test status. If your package is not in a “test-passed” status, you won’t be able to generate retail IDs for it.
    • Child Package Limitations: If a child package is derived from a source package that already has retail IDs, you won’t be able to generate new IDs for the child package. This ensures consistency in your labeling process, as all units from a source package are assumed to be labeled with the same retail ID.
  2. Download and Print LabelsAfter generating the retail IDs, you can simply click “Next” to proceed with the download. Canix sends off a request to the regulatory body (e.g., METRC) for each package to generate the retail IDs, and once processed, you’ll be able to preview and download all the labels.
  3. Each label will contain a unique retail ID, ensuring that every package is fully traceable and compliant with state regulations. After the labels are downloaded, you can print them and continue with your regular labeling process.

Why This Feature Matters

The introduction of retail IDs simplifies compliance for cannabis operators. By integrating the generation of retail IDs directly into the labeling process, Canix helps businesses avoid manual errors, reduce the time spent on compliance-related tasks, and ensure that every product is properly tracked. This improvement is especially crucial in states like California, where traceability and compliance are tightly monitored by regulatory bodies like METRC.
